NFL Scouts - Part Coach, Part Secret Agent
NFL scouts are the eyes and ears of their team's organization. The main duties of NFL scouts are to evaluate potential players for the NFL draft, and to gauge a player's fit to the team. The information gathered by football scouts enables the head coach and team management to make good decisions on which amateur players to draft.
Most players that enter the NFL draft are college football players. Collegiate players that have exceptionally good seasons are often the recipients of major awards such as the Heisman Trophy. Those players are easy to recognize. NFL scouts must also be able to find the hidden talent on collegiate teams that will translate well into the NFL.
The quarterback is arguably the most important position on an NFL team. He is certainly the captain of the offense. The quarterback position can also be one of the most difficult to scout. The NFL is several levels more complex than college football. Some excellent college quarterbacks never make a successful transition to the NFL. Others become NFL stars. Both are the responsibility of NFL scouts who did the evaluations.
Size, strength, and accuracy are some of the qualities that NFL scouts search for in college quarterbacks. A quarterback that is too small or too slow will fail in the NFL. NFL quality quarterbacks must be able to throw long, accurate passes consistently. NFL scouts often watch the receivers to determine how accurate the quarterback's passes are. Receivers who must constantly adjust to the ball may be an indication of a quarterback who needs to work on his accuracy.
NFL scouts also take notice of the finesse, preparation, and delivery of the football. Arm strength is important in a college quarterback. Sometimes finesse rather than brute strength is needed to make a play. The ability of a quarterback to consistently throw the ball into delicate situations is important to NFL scouts. Scouts also rate the footwork of the college quarterback as he prepares to throw, as well as the quality of the release of the football. Clumsy footwork and wobbly throws are warning signs to professional NFL scouts.
Running ability is important in the NFL. Therefore NFL scouts evaluate college quarterbacks on their ability to scramble and even run the ball. Equally important is the ability of the quarterback to choose when to run the ball and when not to do so. College quarterbacks who hesitate to give the ball to others might be potential trouble for an NFL team.
There are many other criteria on which NFL scouts rate college quarterbacks. These can include poise, ability to locate receivers, team leadership, and sportsmanship. The scout must make judgments on how well a college quarterback will mature in the more difficult NFL arena. The only way to get quality NFL players is to hire quality NFL scouts.
