NFL Cheerleaders Are Goodwill Ambassadors
There may be some people who think that NFL cheerleaders as pretty but dumb, but this is certainly far from the truth. It is true that being a cheerleader implies a great degree of physical beauty. The roles of NFL cheerleaders have advanced far beyond a pretty face yelling cheers at a football game. Cheerleaders fulfill a variety of roles in addition to helping cheer on their teams.
The world of NFL cheerleaders is highly competitive. Many women train for months or years to secure one of the prestigious spots on NFL squads. Cheerleader tryouts can stir up as much emotion and heartbreak as any of the beauty pageants. NFL cheerleaders do far more today than yell cheers at the crowd.
When NFL cheerleaders were first considered to play an expanded role, models were used. However, the models lacked the physical ability of today's NFL cheerleaders. Cheerleaders must develop certain athletic characteristics. The modern cheerleader is part dancer, part gymnast, and part choreographer. They must perform complex routines to music. These routines are professionally choreographed and often the eyes of the entire audience is on them as they perform.
NFL cheerleaders also play a part in the merchandising of NFL teams. Cheerleaders often travel to promote their teams. They appear at fundraisers, charity events, and publicity shoots. They are also popular attractions at team functions and promotions. Many NFL cheerleaders have autographed pictures and pose for pictures with the public.
Many squads of NFL cheerleaders publish their own calendars. These calendars were made famous by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. NFL cheerleaders have also appeared on TV game shows, comedy shows, and late night talk shows.
Visiting the troops is a morale boosting effort performed by NFL cheerleaders. In 2000, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders entertained sailors aboard the USS Harry S. Truman. They visited the USS Nimitz to entertain the sailors in 2003. Some teams of NFL cheerleaders make regular USO tours to perform for overseas troops.
Some women use their roles as NFL cheerleaders as springboards to other careers. One of the most popular non NFL cheerleaders is Paula Abdul. She went from Laker Girl to professional choreographer, and landed a music career. She is currently known for her role on the popular American Idol show. Other NFL cheerleaders have gone on to have careers in music, television, movies, and even modeling.
NFL cheerleaders are often taken for granted and are underestimated. Now that you know the difference, perhaps you will look deeper than the pretty faces and see the true depth of NFL cheerleaders.
