What Is the Highest NFL Game Ever?

There is this one question that intrigues many football fans out there -- what is the highest NFL game ever? It happens to be the game between the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants, and ended with a score of Redskins 72, Giants 41 on November 27, 1966. If you didn't get to see this incredible game, keep reading for a recap of the game that has gone down in history for the most points scored ever.

There were 16 touchdowns scored in this game. Ten of them were scored by the Redskins, with the remaining six being scored by the Giants. There was also a field goal which occurred towards the end of the game. Because of a miscue by the Giants' quarterback Tom Kennedy, the Redskins earned some valuable time which they used for kicking practice. Let's go back in time to the moment when the score was 69-41 in favor of the Redskins.

Kennedy lost track of the downs, throwing the ball out of bounds in an attempt to run out the clock. However, this was a mistake on his part because it was the fourth down, not the third as he had thought. This mistake was a costly one, giving the ball to the opposing team at their own 23-yard line. At this point, the Redskins coach Otto Graham directed his kicker to practice because he had missed some field goals during practice the week before. This strategy paid off, because Charlie Gogolak converted the three-pointer and pushed his team's points up to 72 by the end of the game.

This highest NFL game ever took place at a time before nets were placed behind the goal posts to catch the balls. Because of this, often times the footballs would end up in the stands. That day, according to the report of a newspaper, fourteen balls were lost to the stands. This cost the Redskins a few hundred dollars -- certainly a small price to pay for winning a game that has gone down in football history as legendary! Whether or not these points will ever be surpassed remains to be seen. Now that you know this little piece of football trivia, you're ready to impress your fellow football fans and maybe even win a few friendly bets in the process!
